No One’s Coming To My Blog – The Whys And Wherefores Of SEO
by facebook on Mar.11, 2010, under SEO
As the proud owner of a blog, you revel in your freedom to tackle sensitive issues, campaign against nefarious causes, dispense conspiracy theories, dish up juicy gossip… or do just about anything you want. It’s your world. But if no one’s coming to your site, what’s the point? Incredible content keeps people crowding into your blog, but SEO is what will get them there in the first place.
The bad news is that there are literally millions of blogs out there, all fighting for the same eyeballs you want to reach. The good news is that most of them aren’t optimized for search engines properly. This means that if you take simple steps to optimize your site for search engines like Google, Yahoo!, and Bing, you will have a much better chance of getting traffic than most. Here are some quick tips to follow:
1.) If you’re using a blogging framework like Wordpress, Joomla!, or Drupal, don’t forget to put a meta description of the site in the main index page of the website. If you skip this step, when people come across you on Google, all they will see is a line of meaningless keywords skimmed from the last article that Google saw. It will say the name of the site and “Tagged with…” That looks ridiculous. In most content-management systems, the code for the main site is in a folder called “Themes” or “Templates.” Find that, open index.php, and add the following code to the head section: meta name=”description” content=”what my website is about here.” This step is one that few bloggers take to heart, and your blog will be optimized for search engines way more than theirs almost by default.
2.) Do put meta tags on your articles. It might seem a bit ugly, but nothing is better for pushing you higher in search engine rankings.
3.) Give your images meaningful names that are keyword rich. For example, instead of calling that funny mugshot of the President “obama1,” call it “obama_and_precious_teleprompter_TOTUS”.jpg or something equally inflammatory. Then change the file permissions on your uploads folder to 777 so that people can follow your pictures from places like Google Images and make the jump to your site. If not, they’ll get the “Access Denied” message, and no one wants that slap in the face.
4.) Give vivid names to all your articles. This pushes your article above the clutter of the Internet.
5.) Have your pages export to static HTML pages with long URLS. That way people will see “yourblogname.com/a_funny_article_name_here” instead of “yourblogname”/a=?45655.php.” In Wordpress and most other content management system, you can download and install a free plugin to make this possible. Static HTML pages are important for another reason: If someday you make it to the front of Digg, your website – and more importantly, your MySQL database – won’t be under so much stress. That will guarantee you stay up and enjoy the traffic, not crash because of it.
6.) Add a sitemap to your site. These are.xml files that help Google know what all the pages on your site are for. These are also free plugins for most major blogs. A good one will update automatically and ping the major search engines every time you change something. The more often Google knows you have fresh content, the more often they will index you.
7.) Don’t forget to be a good citizen and visit other blogs. Leave comments on their sites with links to yours. Comment on your site about theirs and provide a link to it. Most blog owners constantly check where their traffic is coming in, and they love incoming links. They are very apt to scratch your back if you scratch theirs.
8.) Use an SEO services company. Have them check out your site and see if you are doing everything you can to earn free traffic from search engines. You may be amazed to see how fast they can push you up!

To SEO Or Not To SEO – You Decide
by facebook on Mar.11, 2010, under SEO
Whenever I ask an online business owner what they would like out of their online marketing programs, I get the same response: “I want to be on the top of Google search.” It is widely accepted that the first page of Google is the single most effective place to gain massive online exposure.
The plethora of SEO companies out there will tell you the same thing. In fact there is so much information on the internet that it would seem that this is really the only place to market an online business. Many online businesses have bought into this theory. In fact so many businesses are so convinced that this is the best approach that they spend thousands of dollars every month on SEO or Google PPC.
Naturally the question arises at some point, is this really the most effective way to spend marketing dollars? And the answer is “sometimes.” For large companies, being on the top of Google is of paramount importance. Imagine if you did a search for tennis shoes and Nike didn’t come up. That would hurt their image more than anything.
Also, Google is a great marketing solution for business that leverage the PPC format. If a business can get enough clicks at the right price to generate a decent ROI, as is the case for many businesses, then it is a great solution.
The issue that arises with Google is price and competition. Imagine if you could receive just as much targeted traffic for less money. Wouldn’t that be great? Of course!
Let’s imagine that a certain keyword is searched 100,000 times on Google each month. To get on the first page for a search like this will cost thousands of dollars each month in SEO fees. Even if you don’t make it to page one, as is often the case because there are many more businesses than there are spaces on page one, you would still have to pay large sums of money to attempt to get on page one.
Realistically, what would you get in return for placement on page one. Best case scenario, you would receive 10,000 clicks each month. If you spent $5,000 per month to be on page one, then you would be paying 50 cents per click. Not a bad deal right?
Wrong. 10,000 visitors per month is great traffic for most online businesses, but $5,000 per month on marketing is a lot for most online businesses. So the question becomes how can a business get the same amount of exposure (targeted traffic) for a more reasonable price?
The answer lies in Marketing 2.0. This new marketing strategy takes into account the nature of internet users today. As we are all aware, people search for products and services all over the internet, not just Goggle. Examples of other places people will search are Discussion Forums, Blogs, Directories, and even Social Networks. Marketing 2.0 leverages every major platform to gain additional exposure for online businesses.
A Marketing 2.0 program should cost substantially less than a Google SEO campaign designed to generate an equivalent level of exposure. To generate 10,000 visitors through Marketing 2.0 a business would have to place themselves on hundreds, or even thousands of online destinations, such as the ones mentioned above. This can be an overwhelming task for online marketers. That is why it is important to consult a marketing firm that offers programs for Marketing 2.0.
Now, imagine if a Marketing 2.0 campaign could generate 10,000 visitors for say $1,000. That would be a much better investment than SEO, right? Of course! The best part of Marketing 2.0 is the longevity of the program. The infrastructure created by Marketing 2.0 will continually drive traffic to your website for months after you pay. As opposed to SEO, where your page would fall through the ranks of Google if you did not work on SEO each month. Now, I hope the benefit is even more clear.
